March 31st is the last day of the financial year 2025-26, making it crucial for tax-related matters. The government wants all pending work to be completed by this date, eliminating any backlog. Simply put, this is the No Backlog Mission.

Why is this day important for taxpayers?

March 31st of every year is the busiest day in the tax system. Advance tax payments, tax-saving investments, and pending notices 

or work must be cleared by this date. This is also the time for the department to complete data reconciliation and verification.

New tax system comes into effect from April 1

A new income tax law will replace the old rules, which will come into effect on April 1, 2026. Its aim is to simplify the tax system and make it more understandable for the general public.

Major changes in the budget

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several significant changes in Budget 2026-27. These include increasing the STT on F&O trades, changes to the buyback tax, reducing the MAT rate to 14%, and revising TCS rates.
